Inside the Mind of Google
By now I am sure many people have seen CNBC’s special Inside the Mind of Google. CNBC provides an unusual inside look at the brains behind Google as well as their search engine and other Google products. In 1998 Google started out small by 2 grad students but has quickly become the most successful company in the world. The key to their success, they say is from keeping their employees happy. Who wouldn’t want to work for Google, with free food, a gym, the ability to wear whatever you want and just an overall comfortable environment.
While we all know how popular Google is, I was shocked to learn of the money they bring in. Google’s search engine, which is a free service, is probably the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of Google, but in 2008 Google brought in $4 billion of revenue! 95% of Google’s revenue comes from Adwords, the PPC advertising done on Google’s search engine.
In the CNBC Google interview there was some talk of how they rank websites. Google executives talked about the importance of the number of times keywords appear in a site as well as the number of incoming links. No one knows for sure all the factors in Google’s algorithm, but those hints did not give much away. SEO experts were already well aware of the importance of keywords and links as well as many other factors Google uses to rank websites.
Also discussed in the CNBC Google interview is the controversy over potential security issues. There are about 2 billion searches per day in Google. Every single search done in Google is stored. They keep track of the search terms used and the IP address viewing them, unless you are logged in which case search terms are associated with your Google account. Google says the reason behind storing all of this information is to help with queries. Some people wonder about the security risk this poses. While everyone is almost certain Google will not do anything harmful with this data, the concern is about what would happen if the data would get into someone else’s hands. I personally believe that the data is being stored to hopefully benefit our experience and trust that in Google’s hands it will be safe.
Google Apps were briefly discussed in the CNBC interview of Google. Some government agencies, including police forces and fire stations, use Google Apps like Earth to aide in their rescues. There are some people that believe Google Apps being hosted on Google’s servers creates a privacy issue. While I can understand their concerns, I would trust Google to use the data to help better the applications and to not risk a breach in privacy.
CNBC’s look Inside the Mind of Google helped enlighten both the savvy internet users and the beginner internet users about how powerful Google really is. It is great to see a story about a small company growing into arguably the most successful company in the world. I don’t see Google slowing down anytime soon as they keep coming out with new products and services and continue to dominate the internet.
